While gaining a broad range of knowledge working in various design firms, I began finding side projects, gradually building a network of clients that afforded me the opportunity to break out on my own. The challenge of expanding this business from a small partnership into the vibrant firm that it is today is one I continue to relish.
My approach to design is rooted in attention to detail and function. Symmetry, proportion, and the natural function of materials are concepts that I keep in the forefront as I compose solutions to design problems. The simplest solution is often the most elegant, the most cost effective, and the most timeless.
As an owner and principal at d+k, my goals include growing a community of well rounded designers and to manage the firm in a way that allows us to navigate the changes in the building industry. We have worked hard over the years to build a portfolio of a variety of projects - residential, offices, hospitality and restaurants, nightclubs, hotel lobbies, and light industrial - which I feel allows us to maintain a strong and diverse presence in the industry.
Extracurricular: Furniture and woodworking, competitive Master’s swimming, golf, travel, lots of time watching the kids’ sports.

My background and current design focus are centered on contemporary design, ecological responsibility, and emerging building technology. The urban context of the majority of our projects is well suited to these genres, but a goal of mine is to someday exercise them in a rural context. Having grown up far from the city, blending the built environment into the landscape is a pursuit I am working towards as we expand d+k beyond the bounds of the Chicago area.
The motivation that propelled me into partnering to form d+k grew from my experiences in large firms, where the contributions of all members are washed out by the size and inflexibility of the firm. I encourage our team to express their individual talents, contribute to the success of our projects, and grow as designers in their own right. This environment also allows me the flexibility to work to expand our business relationships while also having a hand in the designs we produce.
Extracurriculars: Coaching my boys’ teams - football, baseball, and basketball, and working on projects around the house.

B. Arch, B.F.A.Previous work experience at Krueck and Sexton, Lucien LaGrange associates, and woodworking/furniture design.
Ideally, I strive to be able to apply the concepts involved in detailed disciplines such as furniture design, as well as the broad understanding required of urban planning and development, to each project I work on. Both scales can inform the details and process required to find architectural solutions, and this perspective is central to my design practice.
My role at d+k affords me the opportunity to be involved in the daily design process, as well as act as a supervisor and teacher to members of my team. I approach each new project as an opportunity to build upon the lessons we have learned from solving previous design problems, and apply those to our client work moving forward.
Extracurriculars: ceramics, sewing, woodworking, and horseback riding.

Minor, Construction Management, Ecologically Sustainable DesignJoined d+k during undergrad, back in the very beginning.
In addition to my strong interest in ecologically responsible design, I seek opportunities to integrate abstract ideas into the usually ordered process of architectural design. The use of technology as a tool to rapidly evolve concepts throughout the development of a design is also at the core of my approach.
With each of my projects at d+k, I begin with an open mind and look to include the ideas of both my team and the client as we look for design solutions. I consider a project a success in the end if the client is happy, and I have been able to incorporate my goals and influences into the overall design.
Extracurriculars: Biophilic design, guerrilla gardening, permaculture, architectural photography and travel, street art, the Beat Generation authors, bicycles/skateboarding
